Let us study the CARNOT CYCLE first. It deals with processes involved in a Heat Engine. The cycle helps us study the effect of heat on the medium. To extract maximum work output from a heat source one needs to increase the efficiency of the engine. Pressure, Volume and Temperature being the governing parameters, the PV Graph summaries the processes with included area of the graph indicating the work yield. 1-2     Isothermal Expansion where heat gets transferred from Infinitely hot Heat                Source to the system. The Temperature remains same as the gas expands  with pressure dropping.

2-3     Adiabatic Expansion where the hot gas expands owing to its latent heat. The gas keeps expanding with temperature and pressure dropping.

3-4   Isothermal Compression where the gas is compressed to higher pressure, but the temperature maintained same, as the heat is removed from the system.

4-1     Adiabatic Compression when the gas continues to be compressed but the  temperature increasing since the heat has nowhere to go.
